Chester Copperpot

The producer out of Chicago who’s mates with Braintax and is eyeing the UK’s top names for collaborations spared a minute to chat with Mark on a few things.

How did you get involved in production?

I didn’t like hip hop. I wanted it to change. I was buying hip hop records, fiendishly, but to tell the truth the only stuff I was feeling was the uk heads. Basically it went like this: credit card, music store, mpc 2000xl, $2000 of debt.

What sort of equipment are you using to build your beats/tracks?

Now I use an mpc 4000 instant debt machine, some compressors, some secret ass shite. More debt.

What’s your next release going to be?

“Chapter 7 Verse 3” featuring Edo G and Braintax, dropping September 21st, 2004. It is the last single off my upcoming album, “Chapter 7” which drops October 26th, 2004.

You and Braintax are good mates, How did you two meet?

I was in London a few years back, must’ve been 2000 I think. But I got in touch with Joey Brains because I was a big fan. He was cool as twelve and we have been tight ever since. I try and visit every year.

How healthy do you think UK Hip-Hop is doing right now?

As far as I know it is thriving. There are a number of cats that I rate highly. But more than that the attitude seems to be positive, on a more cultural tip. Heads in the uk might see it differently, but they live it. The grass is always greener on the other side as they say with the cliché. Here it is more capitalistic perhaps, but America is like that. More More More. All the time. Sometimes it stinks over here.

Who would you most like to work with on your next LP (dead or alive)?

Man, the list is long but I can name a few: Slick Rick, Chubb Rock, Masta Ace, Rodney P, Sadat X, Bahamadia, Task Force, Jehst, Asaviour, Devin The Dude. That’s a few.

Who is the hottest property out of Chicago right now?

Copperpot for president, I’m a bush wacker. Besides me? Shit, Kanye West I guess if you are looking at dollars and cents, Diverse is doing things, there are a number of cats with skills and talent.

Who (In your opinion) should we look out for in the coming year/s?

Jonny Barnacle. K-kruz, another producer on my label, I learn a lot from him. DJ Sapien, he’s all over the place.
